Discover the abundance hidden in the desert during this two-day field class in which participants will prepare and taste a sampling of the desert’s edible plants including a traditional fire pit roast with meat. William Pink, Luiseno/Cupeno Native Skills Teacher, will teach participants about the plants historically harvested by the native peoples of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts and then guide participants through the process of turning wild edibles into a gourmet meal using traditional cooking techniques. Dishes prepared will be according to availability and seasonality. No plants will be harvested in Joshua Tree National Park, but plants used in the class will be reviewed, and respectful gathering practices will be discussed, so that participants can identify the wild edibles that thrive in the desert.
