There are no trails that navigate the majestic Eagle Mountains that harbor a castle from the 1940s in Joshua Tree National Park. This all-day field class will journey to one of the most secluded sites in the park: a prospector’s home hidden deep in the ocotillo covered hills of the Eagle Mountains. Mark Wheeler, outdoor guide and naturalist, will discuss these unique mountains and their connection to volcanism, the importance of the south boundary of the park, the mystery of the castle’s cultural mining history, and the pre-historic people who also inhabited the site. Not much is known about the prospector who lived at “the castle” but this single room home under a boulder is an amazing structure in a dry desert landscape. Persons attending must be in good physical condition, comfortable spending the day rock scrambling and walking up to ten miles in the park.
