Put on sturdy walking shoes and prepare to explore the heart of the Colorado Desert where Joshua trees are replaced by smoke trees, palo verde trees, and palms. Naturalist and outdoor guide Mark Wheeler will lead participants on a ten-mile trek with possible rock scrambling up Pinto Wash and into the Eagle Mountains to learn about the unique ecosystems found in the southern most section of the park. Participants will be amazed at the geologic origins of the two distinct mountain ranges that dominate the landscape - Eagle and Coxcomb Mountains. The class will also learn about the Pinto Culture that lived in the Pinto Basin area during prehistoric times. No prehistoric sites will be visited.
