Warm September nights are a perfect time to explore the summer Milky Way. As twilight fades, the Milky Way arcs high across the evening sky revealing a fascinating cosmic environment. David Chappell, Associate Professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of La Verne, will lead participants on a tour of the stars, clusters, and nebulae that reside along the galactic plane in this field class. Starting indoors, the course will begin with practical observing techniques to identify stars and constellations including a survey of the diverse inhabitants of our galaxy, star-forming regions, interstellar dust clouds, and black holes. After sunset, the class will move to the field for a guided exploration of the Milky Way using sight, binoculars and telescopes to discover the universe that surrounds us. (Telescopes are provided.)
